What is Moonstone?

Moonstone, also known as hecatolite, belongs to feldspar group minerals. Its name derives from the stone's characteristic visual effect, called adularescence (or schiller), which produces a milky, bluish interior light. This effect is caused by the diffraction of light through alternating layers of orthoclast and albite within the stone. The diffracted light varies from white to blue, depending on the thinness of the albite layers. A blue sheen is produced if the albite crystals are very fine. If the albite plate is thick, the sheen is white. The color of moonstone can vary from colorless to creamly white, gray, blue, green, peach, and even black.

Types of Moonstone

Rainbow Moonstone

Rainbow moonstone is usually colorless or white with a blue or rainbow-colored adularescent effect that moves as the stone turns.
This effect is caused by the reflection, refraction and scattering of light within the stone's feldspar layers. The stone is often used in jewelry, especially in bohemian or mystical styles.

White Moonstone

White moonstone is usually translucent to transparent, and its color can vary from colorless to creamy white.
White moonstone is a popular gemstone for jewelry and is often used in earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

Peach Moonstone

Peach moonstone is a variety of moonstone that has a peachy-orange color with a characteristic pearly, opalescent sheen.
The peach color is created by the presence of tiny amounts of other minerals, such as aluminum or copper in the stone.

Grey Moonstone

Grey moonstone is a variety of moonstone that has a grey or silverish color with a characteristic pearly, opalescent sheen.
The gray color is caused by the presence of tiny inclusions of other minerals in the stone, which can create a cloudy or misty appearance.

Black Moonstone

Black moonstone is a type of feldspar mineral that resembles traditional moonstone but appears in various shades of black, gray, or dark brown.
It also exhibits adularescence like rainbow moonstone, but the colors that appear are usually white rather than blue hue. The shimmering effect is caused by the interaction of light between the layers of feldspar within the stone.

Green Moonstone

Green moonstone is not as well known as the rainbow moonstone, but it’s still a lovely gemstone. It usually appears slightly white or transparent with a pale green-yellow color.
It brings a vivifying sense.

Multi-Moonstone

Multi-moonstone is a type of moonstone that displays multiple colors and iridescence. It is a feldspar mineral that belongs to the same family as other moonstones. It is an ideal gemstone for all seasons. It is a popular gemstone for jewelry such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

What is Tumbled Stone?

Tumbled Stones are small polished rocks that have been smoothed and shaped by a process called "tumbling". This process involves placing rough, unpolished stones with abrasive grit and water into a machine called a rock tumbler, which is then rotated for a period of time to smooth out the rough edges and polish the stones. Tumbled Stones can be made from a variety of different minerals, including quartz, amethyst, jasper, agate and many others.

What are Tumbled Stones used for?

Tumbled Stones are polished rocks that have undergone a tumbling process with abrasives to give them a smooth and shiny surface. They can be used for jewelry making, as decor or for collecting.
